Strategies: Remarkable women who are changing the world

By Rhonda Abrams, USA TODAY

More than 600 women eager to launch their own business packed the room. What a buzz! The panel provided both practical advice and inspirational stories. As a speaker, I got a lot out of it as well. Being around so many energetic, optimistic, and creative entrepreneurs always gives me a boost. I’m always amazed and impressed with the ideas for new businesses.

I thought I’d share some of the highlights from the conference particularly relevant to those of us who run small businesses:

•Martha Beck, author of “Steering by Starlight,” shared her knowledge of transformation and growth. Whether in our lives or our businesses, we expect growth to be a continual upward path. Instead, growth is more like a spiral, Beck reminded us. While a spiral eventually goes up, with each rotation, there’s also a period when it goes down. Likewise, we progress upwards, but part of our growth process always contains a period when we feel as if we’re descending. All part of the journey!

•Marcus Buckingham, author of Find Your Strongest Life, gave insight into what differentiates successful people from those less successful. Working with the Gallup Organization to study the traits of successful individuals, here’s one of the most important conclusions they reached: successful people concentrate on improving their strengths rather than overcoming their weaknesses. Think about that for a moment. What if you emphasized your strengths in your business, rather than fretting all the time over what you don’t do well? Could you improve your bottom line and be happier?

• Steven M.R. Covey, author of the Speed of Trust showed the benefits of working in an environment of trust. When people — colleagues, team members, family, friends — trust one another, things get done faster and cheaper. By building an atmosphere where trust is given, expected, and elicited, you can lower costs in your own business.

• Maria Shriver, Elizabeth Edwards, Susan St. James, and Lisa Niemi poignantly revealed how they cope with loss. Maria’s beloved mother, Eunice, died Aug. 15 and Lisa’s husband, Patrick Swayze passed away recently. Both Elizabeth and Susan have lost children. The session was heart-wrenching, and there wasn’t a dry eye among the 15,000 women in the arena. My lesson: Keep our own day-to-day problems and disappointments in perspective.

Finally, culminating the two-day conference was the presentation of the Minerva Awards, created by Shriver to acknowledge women who have made extraordinary contributions. The accomplishments of the four women remind us all that, even as we work to build better businesses, there’s also the need to build a better world. Agnes Stevens created a program to insure that homeless children still get an education; Kathy Hull created a hospice for dying children; Helen Waukazoo helps native Americans overcome substance dependency, and my personal hero, Jane Goodall, pioneered our understanding of the nature of animals and the interdependence of all on this earth. Remarkable women, changing their — and our — world.

You can watch many of the sessions from the conference at www.californiawomen.org. And you — whether a woman or a man — can also become an architect of change.

So far, Swine flu, H1N1, has killed thirty-six children in U.S. and analysis of CDC data indicates Vitamin D deficient children at higher risk of death. 58 million American children are Vitamin D deficient; 7.6 million are severely deficient. When researchers looked at more than 6,000 American kids (age one to 21) who were carefully selected to be representative of the average American child. 9 percent of the kids had 25(OH)D levels less than 15 ng/mL and 70 percent had levels less than 30 ng/mL.

Our product is so well designed. Vitamin D. See the WESTON PRICE STUDY below..
According to study – There is a potential for VITAMIN K shortage with excess vitamin D [remote potential]
Our product has both vitamin D and K. It is brilliantly formulated..

The dose of vitamin D that some researchers recommend as optimally therapeutic exceeds that officially recognized as safe by a factor of two; it is therefore important to determine the precise mechanism by which excessive doses of vitamin D exert toxicity so that physicians and other health care practitioners may understand how to use optimally therapeutic doses of this vitamin without the risk of adverse effects. Although the toxicity of vitamin D has conventionally been attributed to its induction of hypercalcemia, animal studies show that the toxic endpoints observed in response to hypervitaminosis D such as anorexia, lethargy, growth retardation, bone resorption, soft tissue calcification, and death can be dissociated from the hypercalcemia that usually accompanies them, demanding that an alternative explanation for the mechanism of vitamin D toxicity be developed. The hypothesis presented in this paper proposes the novel understanding that vitamin D exerts toxicity by inducing a deficiency of vitamin K. According to this model, vitamin D increases the expression of proteins whose activation depends on vitamin K-mediated carboxylation; as the demand for carboxylation increases, the pool of vitamin K is depleted. Since vitamin K is essential to the nervous system and plays important roles in protecting against bone loss and calcification of the peripheral soft tissues, its deficiency results in the symptoms associated with hypervitaminosis D. This hypothesis is circumstantially supported by the observation that animals deficient in vitamin K or vitamin K-dependent proteins exhibit remarkable similarities to animals fed toxic doses of vitamin D, and the observation that vitamin D and the vitamin K-inhibitor Warfarin have similar toxicity profiles and exert toxicity synergistically when combined. The hypothesis further proposes that vitamin A protects against the toxicity of vitamin D by decreasing the expression of vitamin K-dependent proteins and thereby exerting a vitamin K-sparing effect. If animal experiments can confirm this hypothesis, the models by which the maximum safe dose is determined would need to be revised. Physicians and other health care practitioners would be able to treat patients with doses of vitamin D that possess greater therapeutic value than those currently being used while avoiding the risk of adverse effects by administering vitamin D together with vitamins A and K.

I understand how it feels to be in pain and feel invisible. I know what it feels like to have to give up on a career you love because of physical limitations, and was told at 40 years old “It is just your age… your body is changing… you have to get used to it.” I knew something was wrong. I knew I shouldn’t feel like I was 80 years old while still in my 40s.

Every day was a challenge and I was sure best part of my life was over. Without nursing I didn’t know who I was anymore! I started praying for God to increase my capacity to love and increase my territory. See my notes on Facebook to learn more about me and the debilitating symptoms I experienced. After a diagnosis of sacroiliitis and three herniated disks in 2008, with a spinal injection (with some relief,) I decided that I had two choices. I could give up and accept the downward spiral of my health or I could become proactive and fight my way back to health. This was the beginning of my health and wellness journey. I never had the second or third spinal injection… I didn’t need them! I finally found relief with alternative medicine and nutritional supplements. I also discovered I was hypothyroid and suffering from Vitamin D deficiency. Either of these could have caused my symptoms and I had both. Finally, for the first time in years, I was pain free and I was determined to stay pain free.

Today I am pain free 95% of the time without the use of drugs or OTC medications. I have lost 25 pounds and have a new wellness physician who is pleased with my progress.

After 20 years as a nurse and dealing with death and disease everyday, I have decided to spend the rest of my working career on health and wellness and helping women make informed choices about their own health through the combination of traditional, alternative, and complimentary medicine approaches.

In the beginning, all I wanted was to be a member of WWS, but there were no chapters in Ohio so I decided to start one. In trying to find support for myself, I have learned to look beyond self and to reach out to other women. I have learned that when you give love it always comes back ten fold!!! God is so good!

Join me on Facebook! See my “Before and After” pictures in my photos! You can see the pain on my face as I try to hold my granddaughter long enough to take a picture. Also, see my testimony on my Facebook information page.

I asked myself once where I wanted to be in five years, and in five years I was there. If I had never asked myself that question and decided on the answer, I would not have recognized the chance of a lifetime when it came along. If we are afraid to dream, afraid to take a chance, afraid to live… one day we will look back and say. What happened to my life? Guess what! You were not running your life. Someone or something called JOB or BOSS was running it! Take a chance on yourself and redesign your life to fit your dreams.

It is Official! Friday, July 10, 2009 at 3:18am |

I remember when I was first considering doing this and talking to Nancy and Kellie. There was a few days when, after the initial excitement wore off, I started thinking “What am I doing? What makes me think I can do this?” I prayed and asked God if I was really the one that he wanted to do this work for Him. Then I decided that, maybe he was going to lead me to the person that he wanted to do it. A little while later I was in the bathroom hanging a shower curtain. For me, there is just something about the bathroom. I don’t know why, but that seems to be where I get most of the answers to the questions that I ask God. I was hanging the shower curtain and wandering if I had any idea what I was getting myself into and wandering if I was the right person for the job and it was like I could see Noah building the Ark and God spoke to my heart and said, “I told Noah to build an Ark.” That was it… short and sweet. I said, Lord, you told Noah to build the Ark and he built it. You told me to build a Chapter of Women’s Wellness Society so I will build it. I was telling my son, Tyler, about it later that evening and in his quiet ‘matter-of-fact’ way, said “And you know mom, it had never even rained when God told Noah to build the Ark.” He got it! God told me, but it took my 13-year-old son got it! Noah had never seen rain and didn’t know what it was. But he built the Ark and made all the preparations for the flood. That was when I knew that I had work to do and that this Chapter belongs to God. I am getting ready for the flood. The flood of women who are looking for an excellent wellness support group like Women’s Wellness Society. This has all been a stretch for me because I was always kind of shy and quite. One day I took the quiz on Face book “What Bible character are you most like?” and it said I was most like Moses. There is another story about my life which goes with this that makes this answer special, but I will save that for another day. Anyway, I was telling my son, the 13-year-old, about it and he said “You know Moses couldn’t talk either. He had to get his brother to help him.” All I could say was “Lord send me a brother. If you want me to do this send me a brother.” Finally, to make a good story better, God didn’t just send me a brother. In less than a week, he sent me two. One of them knocked on my door and guess what his name is. His name is Aaron. That is another story that I will save for another day. All I wanted was to join WWS and be a part of that amazing group of women and have their support. Instead, in my search for help for myself, I have learned to look beyond self and to reach out to others. God is so good!

From co-founder of Meetup and from President Obama re: Meetup groups! See the video – From the White House! Share Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 2:30pm | Edit Note | Delete From Scott Heiferman _ Hello Meetup Organizers! This is Scott Heiferman, co-founder of Meetup. Gotta share this inspiring Meetup news — I was invited to visit the White House and met President Obama a few days ago. Maybe you’ll be inspired hearing what it was about… Not all Meetup Organizers are fans of President Obama, and that’s OK. The President gave a speech about the importance of “community solutions” — and I was invited to be there because so many of your Meetups are examples of people coming together to solve problems — big and small. Here’s a 2-minute (sort of covert) video I made for you while I was there! http://meetupblog.meetup.com/2009/07/white-house.html The President said “the best solutions don’t come from the top-down… Solutions to America’s challenges are being developed every day at the grassroots.” And when he said that, I thought of you — almost 50,000 Meetup Organizers, with millions of people in your Meetup Groups — creating real communities and solving real problems in people’s lives. Sometimes it’s hard being a Meetup Organizer. But it’s worth it when you think of the enormous potential of your Meetups — and the Meetup Groups yet to be started. What’s possible for the future of your Meetup?

D-Ribose may improve fibromyalgia symptoms

She says she has clients with Fibromyalgia that say Pre-burn helps with pain and fatigue… It could be because of the D-Ribose component [not to mention so many other things like B vitamins, green tea, muscle building creatine etc]

Published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine this month, The Use of D-Ribose in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia:
A Pilot Study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine this month, The Use of D-Ribose in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia: explores the use of D-Ribose to decrease the debilitating symptoms of both Fibromyalgia (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Both syndromes are “often associated with impaired cellular energy metabolism.” D-Ribose, a naturally occurring sugar nutrient, is thought to increase the creation of cellular energy in heart and skeletal muscle. The pilot study evaluated its use as a supplement in 41 patients with CFS and or FMS. They were given a dosage of dose of 5g three times daily for a total of 280 g. They completed visual analog scale questionnaires and assessment before and after treatment. The researchers conclude:

D-Ribose, which was well-tolerated, resulted in a significant improvement in all five visual analog scale (VAS) categories: energy; sleep; mental clarity; pain intensity; and well-being, as well as an improvement in patients’ global assessment. Approximately 66% of patients experienced significant improvement while on D-Ribose, with an average increase in energy on the VAS of 45% and an average improvement in overall well-being of 30%… D-Ribose significantly reduced clinical symptoms in patients suffering from Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
